I use them for planning my trading tours or finding good workshop placements. I don't come to brag about my maps empty-handed though.
No, I also made good money in other towns. Just make sure that a village which produces wool is attached. Also make sure the town doesn't have a wool weaver, otherwise buy it and set it to produce something else and then change it to a wool weaver. No idea why they don't let you keep what it was originally producing when you buy a workshop .

I bought a smithy in Ortysia. It started making lots of money at first but then the profit dwindled down to nothing. Its been many in-game days. Switched to a silversmith because thats what the bound-village produces, and it hasnt even started. Im really new to this game so I have n idea whats going on. Is it because the kingdom is at war?
If any of these towns' workshops are the same thing as yours, a brewery in the last example, buy them out and change the workshop to something else. After the workshop is changed sell it for a small overall cost. By manipulating the production in nearby towns you will drive up the cost of your workshop's production, yielding more profit.
